Quantitative Nanomechanical & Tribological Testing in Custom Gaseous Environments
The ability to control molecular processes at the gas/surface interface can be critical when performing nanoscale mechanical and tribological characterization of reactive materials. Gaseous molecules contacting the sample surface can react with functional surface groups and significantly alter the mechanical properties of the surface. Occasionally it is the byproduct of these reactions being studied, but most often it is desired to have these reactions minimized or eliminated.
Hysitron’s environmental control technologies allow custom gas mixtures to fully surround the sample being tested, while still allowing nanomechanical tests to be performed. Reducing gaseous environments can be combined with temperature control to prevent surface oxidation at elevated temperatures. Hysitron’s gaseous microenvironment provides the ability to control surface reactions, enabling quantitative nanomechanical testing to be performed on the surface of interest.
