Quantitative Nanomechanical & Tribological Testing Under Oxidizing or Reducing Conditions
Electrochemistry combined with nanomechanical testing is a powerful technique for investigating the influence of electrode reactions on mechanical properties of materials. Hysitron’s electrochemical cell expands the range of environmental conditions that can be controlled during nanoindentation and tribology experiments. The sample surface potential is controlled through a bias voltage applied to the sample, allowing material behavior to be studied under oxidizing and reducing conditions. Corrosion effects and the formation of oxide under different surface potentials can be quantitatively studied, as well as the effect of the monolayers of material that form. By changing the electrochemical potential, a variety of different environments are able to be simulated during nanoindentation and nanotribological testing.
