Optimizing Coating Performance though Quantitative Nano/Micro Mechanical Testing
Coatings are applied in a variety of areas to enhance aesthetic and/or functional properties of surfaces. Typical functional modifications include corrosion resistance, adhesion properties, wettability, and wear resistance. Coatings are applied in liquid and solid states and undergo some form of post-application curing or solidification process. Understanding microstructural aspects of coating properties enables engineers to develop enhanced performance coatings and optimize processing techniques.
Hysitron has developed a broad set of characterization techniques to measure the mechanical and tribological properties of coatings. Microindentation and nanoindentation provides localized hardness, modulus, fracture toughness, creep, stress relaxation, and viscoelastic properties of coatings. Spatially resolved mechanical property mapping enables a comprehensive understanding of microstructural and interfacial features within the coating to enhance overall coating performance. Additionally, micron scale scratch testing permits localized tribological properties to be determined along with coating/substrate interfacial adhesion.
