Symposium on Functional Coatings and Surface Engineering - Montreal

"Mechanical and tribological properties of thin films and surfaces"
Workshop sponsored by Hysitron Inc.

Control and analysis of mechanical and tribological properties is essential for the optimization of the performance of thin films, thin film systems and material surfaces. They could significantly impact applications ranging from microelectronics, optoelectronics and microsystem devices (such as MEMS and MOEMS) to optical, biomedical, aerospace, automobile and other applications. Therefore, an appropriate methodology is required in order to quantitatively determine important characteristics such as adhesion, stress, hardness, Young's modulus, and wear-, abrasion- and scratch resistance.

This one day workshop will feature the following:

  • Introduction to basic mechanical and tribological properties
  • Techniques for quantitative assessment of mechanical properties
  • Introduction to the analysis of the mechanical test data
  • Hands-on laboratory session using Hysitron's TriboIndenter® instrument

During the laboratory session, it will be possible to test a limited number of your own samples. If such is desired please contact Etienne Bousser etienne.bousser@polymtl.ca.
