Thin Films

Thin films continue to become more and more integral to numerous applications in today's advancing technologies.  Materials of many types are used in thin film applications in various areas of research and commercial settings.  The ever-increasing importance of thin films combined with a decreasing size scale in thin film applications make small-scale testing of such thin films a necessity.

Hysitron's patented three-plate capacitive transducer provides the sub-nanometer depth-sensing capability and nanonewton force sensitivity required for accurate nanomechanical characterization of thin films.

Several testing modes including nanoindentation, nanoscratch, and nanowear can be utilized using Hysitron's instruments to obtain critical thin film material information including:  hardness, modulus, interfacial adhesion, friction, wear, fracture toughness, , acoustic emission, surface roughness, film thickness, tribological properties, stress relaxation, and creep.
