The need for nanomechanical characterization of ceramics is ever-increasing due to the rising number of small-scale structures, miniaturization of devices, and for testing individual components in multi-layered or multi-phase ceramic applications.

Material properties including hardness, and fracture toughness of ceramic materials can be quantified at the nanoscale using Hysitron's instruments.  Acoustic emissions testing was specifically developed to allow fracture events to be monitored prior to any visual defect has formed.

For identification and characterization of individual phases in multi-phase ceramic materials, Modulus Mapping provides both a qualitative and quantitative solution combining in-situ SPM imaging with nanoDMA.
